WHAT IS HYBRID FLOORING?

Hybrid flooring is a next-generation flooring solution that combines the best features of laminate and vinyl. It’s a rigid floating floor system that is waterproof, durable, and highly stylish—making it ideal for both residential and commercial use.

Hybrid floors are made with multiple layers, typically including a UV-resistant top wear layer, a decorative print layer (often mimicking timber), a rigid limestone composite core, and a pre-attached acoustic backing for comfort and sound reduction.

Here are the key steps for installing hybrid flooring:

• Subfloor Preparation: The surface must be clean, dry, and level. Hybrid flooring can be installed over most existing hard floors, but a smooth and stable base is crucial for longevity.

• Underlay Installation (if required): While many hybrid flooring planks come with built-in underlay, some installations may still require an additional underlay layer for enhanced soundproofing or moisture protection.

• Acclimatisation: The hybrid planks are acclimatised to the room’s temperature and humidity for 24–48 hours before installation.

• Plank Installation: The hybrid planks are laid using a click-lock floating floor system, meaning they snap together without glue or nails.

• Trims and Finishing Touches: Skirting boards or scotia trims are added around the edges to cover expansion gaps and complete the look.

HYBRID FLOORING VS VINYL AND LAMINATE FLOORING

Appearance

Hybrid flooring offers the aesthetic appeal of natural timber, thanks to high-definition print layers and textured finishes that mimic wood grain. It delivers the realistic look of hardwood with more consistency and at a lower price.

Compared to traditional vinyl, hybrid flooring is thicker, feels more solid underfoot, and often looks more luxurious. Compared to laminate, hybrid is quieter, more water-resistant, and better suited to wet areas.

Durability

One of hybrid flooring’s biggest advantages is its resilience. The rigid core provides resistance to dents and temperature changes, while the top layer protects against scratches, stains, and UV fading.

Unlike laminate, hybrid flooring is 100% waterproof, making it suitable for kitchens, laundries, and bathrooms. It’s also less prone to warping or expanding due to humidity compared to traditional laminate.

Comfort and Acoustics

Hybrid flooring generally includes a built-in acoustic underlay, which improves comfort underfoot and helps dampen sound—ideal for upper floors, apartments, and busy households.

Vinyl flooring can feel softer underfoot, but hybrid flooring offers a more solid, timber-like experience without the echo or clickiness associated with laminate.

Maintenance

Hybrid flooring is low-maintenance and easy to clean. Regular sweeping or vacuuming, and occasional mopping with a damp (not soaking) mop, will keep it looking new.

Unlike timber floors, hybrid doesn’t require sanding, sealing, or refinishing. Its durable surface resists most household spills and scuffs.

Hybrid flooring is generally more affordable than hardwood and engineered timber, while offering better performance in moisture-prone areas. It’s typically more expensive than laminate, but the added waterproofing and durability often justify the extra investment.
